Walk in Her Woods: Shoreham Tree Planting

Thursday, June 6, 2024: 10am - 12pm
Location: Shoreham, VT

Join Women & Our Woods and landowner Melita Bass to explore the restoration work that Melita has been undertaking on her property since 2021. Most recently, the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) and WOW planted 350 trees to restore a former hayfield to clayplain forest—the original forest type of the Champlain Valley. VYCC also spent another two days manually and mechanically removing invasive buckthorn. Melita’s 100-acre property borders Lake Champlain and will also offer us opportunities to do some birding and practice our tree identification skills. Bring your lunch to picnic along the shore after the tour. Children are welcome.

Walk in Her Woods: Rochester Pre-Commercial Thinning

Thursday, June 13, 2024: 4:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: Rochester, VT

Join Women & Our Woods and landowner Doreen Jones as we showcase the forest management work implemented on forest land in Rochester. Doreen’s forest management plan prescribed a thinning in order to favor straight and healthy balsam fir and spruce and remove unhealthy or poorly formed trees. So, in the summer of 2023 a Vermont Youth Conservation Corps crew, in partnership with WOW, completed a thinning of 11 acres. Join us to learn what pre-commercial thinning is and its benefits for forest health, resilience, and wildlife habitat. We will also have an opportunity to do some birding and practice our tree identification skills. Children are welcome.
