Forest Management Walk and Presentation at Huntington’s Arbor Day

As part of Huntington’s Arbor Day celebration, join Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper for a walk through an area of the Hinesburg Town Forest (HTF) that has been managed over the past winter. The purpose of this management, prescribed in the HTF’s 2018 Forest Management Plan, is to improve the health and vitality of the forest while demonstrating modern, responsible forest management in an open, transparent, and inclusive way. In addition to encouraging the growth of the highest quality trees at the HTF, improving wildlife habitat and improving the forest’s long-term resilience to natural disturbances and climate change, this work also serves to highlight Vermont’s working landscape, local renewable resource production, and the local economic, ecological and cultural benefits of sustainable forest management.  This walk will run from 9:30 AM to 11:30 PM, meeting at the plow turnaround at the end of Economou Road in Huntington.

Tapper will also be giving a presentation on forest management, entitled “Management or No Management?” from 12:30 – 1:15 at the Huntington Library. This talk will focus on the pros and cons of forest management, and some of the factors to be taken into consideration in the management of forested land.

These events are part of the Huntington Arbor Day Celebration, which also includes several other walks, presentations and exhibits. For those interested in any of these events, please RSVP to the Huntington Public Library via email (hpl@gmavt.net), phone (434-4583) or stop in.
